Cera Alba
Background
The genesis of this project was somewhat accidental. One evening, as I was using my iPad, I saw an interesting image created by the overhead lighting reflecting off the screen and altered by the finger smudges on the screen. I took a photo of the screen and played with it in Photoshop. Although the result (Nebula) was far from being a masterpiece, I was instantly excited and inspired by the creative possibilities. Using the same tools and techniques, I experimented. I quickly found that the size of the iPad screen was limiting and so was born a technique of using a thin film of beeswax wood polish on the surface of a large piece of one quarter inch Plexiglas.

Process
The tools: Camera on a tripod, LED light panel, white cardboard trifold, two sheets of matte black foam core board, 24’ x 18” piece of 3/16” Plexiglas, an assortment of coloured sheets of paper, jar of Clapham’s Beeswax Salad Bowl Finish, aluminum foil, Golden Artist Colours acrylic grounds set, items for manipulating the beeswax and acrylic grounds (Princeton Artist Brush Company Catalyst blades, assortment of paintbrushes, soft cloth, crumpled paper).
